Meeting Jamie and Claire’s parents in the Outlander prequel feels like opening a door to the past I never thought I would walk through.
Two episodes into Blood of My Blood, and it already feels like slipping back into a world I’ve lived in for years, only now I’m seeing it from the other side. For years, I only knew them through Jamie’s memories and brief mentions in Claire’s story. Now they’re right in front of me, alive, young, and real in a way they’ve never been before. It’s surreal in the best way.
I’ll be honest, I was nervous going in. Outlander is a story I love in both the books and the show, and a prequel could have easily felt like a pale imitation. I worried it wouldn’t live up to the original, but so far it’s outstanding, fresh, and new while still carrying the soul of the world we’ve known for years.
The casting couldn’t be more perfect. If it gets any more perfect, I’m sending Starz my dating profile. Brian has that steady, grounded presence that makes you believe in him instantly, and yes, he’s gorgeous. Brian Fraser could convince me to move to the Highlands with nothing but a raised eyebrow and a well-timed “aye.” Ellen moves with a quiet, confident grace that turns heads without even trying. Together, they’re unmistakably the blueprint for Jamie Fraser. Brian and Ellen exchange more emotion in one glance than most couples manage in a year of couples counseling.
And Claire’s parents? Gorgeous too, obviously, but it’s more than that. There’s an ease between them that feels like they’ve already learned each other by heart. They radiate a sharp, quick intelligence that makes it clear Claire’s mind wasn’t just shaped by her experiences; it was inherited. Then came the twist, not just that her mother is a time traveler, but that her father went through the stones as well, landing them both in the same year. It’s a revelation that completely shifts how I see Claire’s history, and it makes me want to revisit the entire story with this new layer in mind.
It’s strange, watching the start of lives when you already know how they end. Every detail is a gift, but it also brings us closer to the day we have to say goodbye to Jamie and Claire. I’m not ready for that. I don’t think I ever will be.
Share your thoughts on Blood of My Blood so far. Are you as hooked as I am on seeing Jamie and Claire’s parents come to life?
